Caslys is working on a project for the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Environment to assist in the development of a baseline Ecological Land Classification (ELC) for various regions of Nunavut. The dataset maintains land cover attributes related to vegetation and landform characteristics. The extraction of these attributes from satellite imagery is particularly challenging in the north due to the region’s unique vegetation types and landscape characteristics. The ELC dataset provides information that facilitates environmental management, for example, wildlife habitat research, vegetation mapping, environmental monitoring and adaptive management planning.
